General Motors fills a blockchain patent for navigation maps
In a recently published application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 2, General Motors Corporation (GM) seeks to obtain a patent for a “Decentralized Distributed Map using a blockchain”.
It will allow autonomous vehicles to continuously collect data on specific routes based on information from one or more sensors. The collected data will be displayed in a blockchain network, allowing multiple users to make changes to the map simultaneously.
The application was filed back in October 2018, and General Motors is currently using the blockchain network to collect data in real time from multiple vehicles. The resulting data is compared to existing maps and any differences are recorded in the blockchain.
The system will check the new addition (difference) in the same way as the financial transactions in the blockchains are checked. Any machine that registers the same difference will issue a confirmation and after verification by the node, this “potential transaction” will be added to the network. The new General Motors platform is likely to revolutionize the automated vehicle industry. Analysts predict that it will be used for the luxury car lineup.
