Vitalik Buterin admitted that Ethereum development should have been done differently

As Ethereum 2.0 mainnet gets ready to launch, co-founder Vitalik Buterin admits developers overlooked sharding, proof of stake design issues.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently visited the podcast Hashing It Out. During the show, he talked about the difficulties faced by the Ether’s development team at an early stage of the project. Buterin also admitted that he would now approach the Ethereum creation with different principles than he did then.

Something in the project took more time to finalize than Vitalik originally thought. For example, the team should have paid more attention to the gas pricing model:

“We didn’t really do a good job of setting those at the beginning.”

The problem of gas is obvious. The fact is that due to high gas prices, ETH network transactions are now too expensive — and the situation does not seem to change.

After mentioning some things that would have to be done differently, Buterin moved on to a list of more global changes:

“We definitely did kind of underestimate how much time it would take to finish a lot of the things that we didn’t start back in 2015.”

The developers made a mistake — they didn’t realize from the very beginning that things like Proof-of-Stake and sharding require a lot of time and effort to create.

“Had we known that it would end up taking us years, we probably would have designed the roadmap differently and thought about what the different teams would be working on differently and making a lot of decisions in that regard in a very different way from how we are now, so, I think, definitely a lot of regrets and wasted time in that regard”.

Transition to Ethereum 2.0 is happening right now — it’s a really long and time-consuming process, which is divided into several phases. Proof-of-Stake was planned to be integrated into Ethereum for a long time, but due to technical difficulties the project is constantly being delayed.
